The Friedgen era ushered in a fresh spin on the Script Terps helmets, with Maryland sporting the white version during the coach’s tenure. Head coaches played a big role in the uniform decision process, said longtime equipment manager Ron Ohringer, and “The Fridge” loved the look. Tonight’s blackout design will be the third major “rewriting” of the script.

3. Black helmet with italicized red M under waving Maryland flag on side

Between Script Terps versions, UMD helmets featured the “M Flag” logo, which was first used on basketball shorts but then adopted for all sports. Head coach Ron Vanderlinden liked how the italicized style evoked movement, Ohringer said.

To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Baltimore at Fort McHenry, Kevin Plank ‘96’s Under Armour released a patriotic one-game uniform for Maryland Football. The helmets, as well as the jersey sleeves and cleats, featured the lyrics of the national anthem.

5. White helmet with gold block-M
Answer: 1972-81
These gold block-M helmets marked the Jerry Claiborne era of Maryland football. Terp great quarterback Boomer Esiason started his UMD career wearing this design.

6. White helmet with gray outlines of turtle shells and Maryland flag stripe down the middle

For three games that season, the Terps went all-in on honoring their diamondback terrapin namesake with helmets modeled after a turtle shell.

8. Gold helmet with black number on side
Answer: 2017 
For Homecoming vs. Indiana that season, Under Armour and the Terps unveiled this all-gold look. The uniforms were a throwback to the 1940s as the team celebrated 125 years of Maryland football.

Answer: 2011-13
Maryland debuted the original “Maryland pride” helmets under new head coach Randy Edsall, fully embracing the beloved state flag.

UMD revamped its flag-inspired helmets in 2013, adding more texture and a bigger “Maryland” logo across the back to create “Maryland pride 2.0.” A third version, featuring more black near the facemask and the M-bar logo on the front, became the Terps’ helmet of choice in 2018 until this season’s return of Script Terps.
