STUDENT CLUB FAKEOUT Test your knowledge! 1. ANIMALS a) Diamondback Delivery: moves turtles stuck in the middle of the road to safety, using a machine learning app to determine which direction they were headed b) Fidos for Freedom: raises puppies as future mobility dogs, hearing dogs and PTSD dogs for Veterans for Fidos For Freedom Inc. c) Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind: provides guide dogs and training, free of charge, to people who are blind or visually impaired d) Move Those Paws: brings together students to play and take care of animals Answer: Diamondback Delivery. UMD is a leader in AI, but just not for this purpose (yet). 2. SPORTS a) Maryland Ultimate Men's Club: promotes growth in Ultimate Frisbee, with members competing in the annual USAUltimate's College Series b) Nerf Activity Society: fosters an environment of athletics, teamwork and sportsmanship through activities with the foam-based toy weapons c) Paintball Team: brings competition-level paint-splattering fun to students and alums d) Pickleball Peck: plays singles or doubles matches in the quickly growing sport Answer: Pickleball Peck. This doesn’t exist, but it could soon, given pickleball’s popularity. Check out the intramural team in the meantime. 3. COMPUTING a) Coding Country: finds CS inspiration in classic country music, from George Jones to George Strait b) Girls Who Code: provides female-identifying and nonbinary students from all majors and backgrounds the opportunity to learn coding languages c) Hack4Impact: creates powerful, impactful software for social good d) Open Sourcery: promotes software development, active learning and lowering the barrier to entry to programming Answer: Coding Country. That was an easy one. 4. SERVICE a) Crocheting for a Cause: teaches how to knit and crochet, supplying yarn, hooks and needles along with patterns to make baby hats and blankets for donation, if members choose b) Get Ovary It: engages in advocacy, outreach and service activities that support accessible and affordable menstrual health products, services and education c) STEPP (Students Toward Educational Progress and Philanthropy): a service-driven step dance team that performs and volunteers around the D.C. area d) Tiny Terps: a buddy system between UMD students and local elementary school students Answer: Tiny Terps. Many UMD clubs offer mentorship opportunities with local schoolchildren, but we invented this one. 5. CHILL REC a) Cool Board Games for Attractive People: plays tabletop board games and card games b) Overbooked: a book club dedicated to reading about different time periods, authors, perspectives and people. c) Pong Preservationists: brings together gamers who eschew colors or shapes that aren’t rectangular for classic ‘70s action d) Terrapin Trading Card Game Club: offers tabletop competitions in Magic: The Gathering and YuGiOh Answer: Pong Preservationists. This game has actually aged poorly. 6. ADVENTURE SEEKING a) Lumberjokes: welcomes novice and experienced amateur lumberjacks and features activities like chainsaw sculpture, ax throwing and logrolling b) Parkour and Freerunning Club: invites students to step up (and swing, hop and climb) to creatively navigate obstacles c) Terps Skydive Club: fosters skydiving as both a recreational and competitive sport. We welcome first-timers to experience their first tandem jump and be part of the Terps Sky Fam. d) Thrill Rides Club: engages in amusement park and entertainment-related discussion and activities such as theme park trips, conferences, and design competitions Answer: Lumberjokes. We wish this one existed, and hosted comedy shows, too. 7. PERFORMING a) Faux Paz: pursues a cappella music as a form of expression that represents the campus and community in a beneficial light b) The Hamil-tones: “Hamilton”-themed a cappella group c) The Hysterics: all-women and nonbinary group performing standup, improv and sketch comedy d) Mockapella: co-ed a cappella group that parodies pop songs with new arrangements and lyrics Answer: The Hamil-tones. But someone needs to start this club immediately. 8. ENGINEERING a) Cringe-ineers: gathers weekly at local chain restaurants to tell dad (and mom) jokes and make awkward toasts with a STEM twist b) Formula EV: designs, builds and competes in a Formula 1-style race car, driven by an electric motor c) Leatherbacks: designs, builds and fights robots in competition, à la the TV series “BattleBots” d) Terrapin Rocket Team: expands members’ engineering and leadership skills through local and national rocket competitions Answer: Cringe-ineers. PLAYS ON TERP/TESTUDO a) TerraFins: develops scuba diving skills and raises awareness of marine issues for recreational, athletic and scientific purposes b) TerraPeers: helps new students integrate into campus life and immerse themselves in the UMD community c) TerraPind Bhangra: co-ed Bhangra dance team maintaining traditional and folk roots from Punjab d) Test YOU Doh!: a study group that shares skills and tips for successful test-taking Answer: Test YOU Doh! FOOD-CENTERED a) Dairy Queens: a group for women that taste-tests and critiques ice cream flavors at the Maryland Dairy b) Dream of Coffee: develops members’ own brewing style and knowledge of their palate, types of coffee beans, and brewing methods to help them create their own brewing recipe. Come to DOC, get COD (Cups of Deliciousness). c) Food Recovery Network: ​​picks up surplus food from UMD dining facilities and delivers it to community partners that provide meals for hungry people in the D.C. area d) Terps Against Hunger: organizes large-scale food packaging events to benefit food-insecure individuals and families in the D.C. area Answer: Dairy Queens.
